Diamond as Big as a Belt Buckle

Monday, July 25th, 2011

The day of Rita Hayworth’s wedding to 3rd husband, Prince Aly Ahan, he gave her an extravagant wedding present – a diamond ring as big as a belt buckle! It was so big that at the time, experts could not even estimate its carats. One of the experts remarked, “It’s so big that it would tire even a weight lifter to wear it for more than an hour.” Another said, “It’s so big that she should watch she does not fracture her finger getting it on and off.”

Not Above Cotton Stockings

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

In 1941, the lovely Rita Hayworth reportedly sent notes to 110 other actresses, asking them to pledge that they wouldn’t hoard silk stockings. There was word that due to the cessation of silk imports from Japan there may soon be a shortage of the stockings. Actresses were buying them in bulk just in case. In the notes Hayworth wrote:

Let’s buy silk hose and undies as we need them. It wouldn’t be fair for girls in the higher income brackets to buy up stocks when there are so many girls who can buy only one at a time. At the worth we’ll have to wear cotton. I wore cotton myself once and can again.

FYI for those of you who aren’t history buffs, the attack on Pearl Harbor would happen about four months after this article was published and silk stockings got a lot harder to find after that!
